Brief overview:

Jan's (75) cause of death is a mystery. His wife Sarah suspected a heart attack. She became concerned when he didn't come to eat breakfast and started looking for him. She couldn't find him anywhere and called the neighbours later in desperation to help search.

Jan's body was found about 2km from his home in the veld on the farm, about 30m from his bakkie. His clothes were on a pile next to his body and he was only wearing his shoes and socks, says one of the farmers who was on the scene. Police were called and forensic tests were conducted at the scene. "The cause of his death is a mystery because there were no strangulation marks on his throat, gunshot wounds or any clearly visible injuries to his body.

Nothing was reportedly stolen and the keys of the bakkie were in the vehicle.

Another source said Badenhorst did not leave a suicide note or say anything extraordinary to his wife before leaving home in the morning.

According to Doors Le Roux (Security), Badenhorst was one of the most well-known inhabitants of Levubu. He previously sold the farm on which he and his wife lived, but stayed and managed it on behalf of the owner. He celebrated his 75th birthday last week.

A source close to the family said there was no one but Badenhorst and his wife on the farm because the workers received their wages on Thursday and had the day off yesterday. Police have begun a judicial inquiry.
