Jan Barnard (1943 - 2015)
Jan (72), and his wife Carmelia were attacked on their farm in Odenddaalrus, Free State on 19th November 2015. The power went out in the house and Jan went outside to switch on the generator. He was attacked by four men and shot dead. His wife went outside to check what was happening. The perpetrators forced her back into the house, and they demanded cash. They then shot her in the hip. It was unclear if they fled with any of the couple's possessions. They were found on Friday morning when workers arrived on the farm. Barnard's wife is in a critical condition in hospital.
In September, civil rights organisation AfriForum said there had been 44 farm murders since the beginning of the year.
