About Jan Aukes Ouke

JAN OUKE, son of Aucke Jansz and Magdalena Pieterse was baptised in Noordeskerk (North Church), Amsterdam 18 December 1650. He died after 1710 since his name appears on the Jamaica Assessment Rolls of that year.

29 July 1673 Jan Ouke married first Barbara Provost, baptised 30 November 1653 (BDC), daughter of David Provoost and Maragretta Gillise, daughter of Gillis Jansen Verbrugge. Barbara died 19 January 1678/9 and Jan married 4 April 1680 Eva Janse, daughter of Jan Jacobse of Brooklyn.

Jan Auckes or Ouke was brought to New Amsterdam by his parents as an infant in 1651. Like his father, he was a carpenter. In 1678 he and Rutgert Albertse were the carpenters who built the parsonage in Flatbush, and it was in Flatbush that he took the oath of allegiance. In 1691 he purchased land in Jamaica where he appears on the tax lists in 1699 and 1710 (KCo)

Issue: children of Jan Ouke and Barbara Provoost.

i. Auke Janse who married Catryntje… and was a deacon in Flat1ands DC in 1725. He removed to Raritan, N. J. where his chi1dren were baptised in the Raritan DC. In New Jersey he assumed the name of Oake Van Nuyse

Children of Jan and Eva Janse:

n.c. The following two, Jan and Geertje, are mistakenedly assigned to Barbara (first wife) in the original document. Baptism records show “Evertje Janse” as their mother.

iii. Jan Janse bp 17 July 1681 ( Brooklyn DC). As Jan Ouke* he married 10 September 1703 (MDC) Helena Kiers.
In 1722 using the name John Ouke Van Nuyse he purchased land in New Brunswick, N.J.
Issue: i. Isaac bp Brooklyn DC 1708 (KCo)
Issue: ii. Jacobus bp New Utrecht DC 1725 (ibid.)
