Jan (41), and his wife Annelize (33), were shot dead on their farm Op-die-Berg in the Koue Bokkeveld near Ceres on Friday 1st June 2001. Farm worker, Japie Evans, saw a fire in the mountain only about 100 meters from the homestead, which he told Jan about. They went to investigate, but Jan didn't take his firearm with him. A man jumped at them, and as Japie ran away, he heard three gun shots. Jan was shot three times in the chest and died immediately.
Japie continued running to get help. When the police and commando unit arrived at the homestead, Annelize was found shot dead in the bathroom.
The attackers had fired shots through the bathroom door. Three suspects were arrested, and one released after uncovering he was not involved. The other two led police to a stash of weapons hidden in the mountain. The weapons had been stolen from another farm near the informal settlement where they had lived.
Parliament Ngulube (41) and Eliat Samela (27) will be tried in the Cape of Good Hope High Court in the course of 2003, on charges of housebreaking and theft of firearms, two counts of murder, housebreaking with aggravating circumstances and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
