About Jan Willems Moes

There are many different versions of Jan Willems Moes family tree displayed on the internet, the obvious explanation for this is that the records are unclear, accepting this we have to view almost every piece of evidence as only 99% believable.

There is no record of Jan Willems Moes marrying anybody ever anywhere, but knowing the social norms of the time we can assume that he was married to Grietje Hendriks Fictorie with whom he had seven (7) children. From the birth of the first child we can reasonably assume that the marriage would have been in 1768, perhaps in Hoogeveen (marriage records for Hoogeveen in this time period are not available online, perhaps they no longer exist).

Grietje Hendriks Fictorie birth record is not available online either but the record of her death states that she was 68 years old when she died in 1811 (it states her place of birth as Zuidwolde) which means she was born about 1743. It is reasonable to assume that her husband was a similiar age to her so his birth is circa 1743.

I have used the online archives of Drenthe (www.drenlias.com) to search for any possible candidates for a birth record that matches the assumptions outlined above. The only record that comes close is a Jan Willems who is born in 1743 to Aafien Jans Moes and Willem Gaukes, this is the data i have used for this profile. There is no other online record of Willem Gaukes other than this birth, he either comes from outside of Drenthe (the name Gaukes suggests a Friesland origin) or the record is inaccurate.

Many researchers publish family trees online which identify Willem Gaukes as either being Willem Hilberts Hagewout/Moes or Willem Geerts Zwiep/Moespot, no evidence of either of these assumptions exists that i am aware of. Online trees which make Jan's father a Zwiep usually list the mother as unknown, those which link Jan to the Hagewout/Moes family identify his mother as Aafien Harms Moeskoker, which is very close to the birth mother recorded in 1743, however my theory (as illustrated in this tree) is that this women was infact the cousin of Jan's mother.

There is no clear record either of a Aafien Jans Moes beyond the birth of Jan Willems Moes but we can tell from the local tax records (Haardstedengeld) of the time that the only Moes families present in Smilde are all related and descendants of Jan Harms Mooskoocker. There is a birth record in 1682 form Smilde that list the childs name as Jannes and the father as Jan Harms, it is highly likely judging by the tax records that this Jan Harms is infact Jan Harms Mooskoocker which would make the child Jannes Jans Mooskoocker/Moeskoker. If Jannes stayed in Smilde and had a daughter she quite reasonably could have been known by the name Aafien Jans Moes(koker), ie. the name of the mother of Jan Willems Moes.

The Moes family in Drenthe in this time period is very well studied, there are no Willem Moes that could be Jan's father (Willem Hilbert Hagewout is not a Moes at all but married to a Moeskoker and the Zwiep/Moespot family of which Willem Geerts is a part all live around Hoogeveen) and the closest match for a birth record within the archives suggests that Jan Willems took the name Moes from his mother's family not his fathers.

One explanation for the confusion in later documents about his parentage may be that Jan was actually raised not by his mother (who perhaps died in child birth?) but by his mother's cousin and her husband (ie, Aafien Harms Moeskoker and her husband Willem Hilberts Hagewout).
