About Jan Otten van Tuyl
Jan Otten van Tuyl came from Holland with his wife and son Otto on the ship De Bonte Koe (The Spotted Cow), arriving in New Amsterdam on April 16, 1663. He was a "young farmer". There was a reason he left Holland, taking his wife and child with him: van Tuyl "killed a man in a tavern knife fight" and was convicted in absentia by the High Bench of Zuilichem and sentenced to death."
