About Jane Cocke

The most compelling part of the book quotes William and Mary College Quarterly Series 1 vo l 9 p46 in essay "Families of Smith": Nicholas Cock of Middlesex Co, Virginia was a Dutch settle r who with Minor Doodes (not sure why this is backwards -Carla) and other Dutchmen, was natur alized a citizen in 1673. He married Jane, widow of Bartholemew Curtis about 1661.

She ha d issue by her first husband, one son:

  1. Nicholas Curtis

and by her second husband, two children:

  • *1) Jane, who married first Rice Jones and second Lt. John Smith, and
    • (2) Maurice, who married Elizabeth, widow of Doodes Minor, son of Minor Doodes. Maurice Cock made his will i n 15 May 1696 and with him the male line of this family became extinct.

As spelled in Dutch or German, Cock was doubtless Koch." -Carla Goodloe
