Jane Berry Rumsey died at 44yo as a result of complications following the birth of her and Jim's 10th child, Henry. The two are buried together not far from their home. A paragraph in her obit tells of her character, "She was one of the best, most devoted and loving of wives. She lived for her husband and her children, and was always at her post of duty, laboring in their behalf. She was a sincere Christian, ever walking in the narrow way, and at all times prepared for the summons which finally came. She was a member of the Methodist Church and her many Christian virtues made her beloved by all the neighborhood. She was buried on last Friday by the Grange Order and a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives followed her remains to their last resting place. She fought a good fight, and kept the faith, and has gone to her final reward. Husband and children, weep for the departed dead. Beyond the vale of tears, she awaits your coming."

Jane's death brought great sorrow to husband and children effecting the whole Berry family deeply. Jane was first of John and Hannah's children to reach maturity, with the exception of young Joe Berry, a casualty of the CW at 18yo. Although Jim remarried again, Jane is buried not far away from both of them. a portrait of hers was found by her brother John Berry Jr later which showed a smiling, pleasant woman, bearing a remarkable resemblance to her mother Hannah.
