Mrs. White Dies, Wife Of Former Governor Social and Civic Leader of Syracuse and Albany Succumbs to Heart Disease at James Street Home After Recent Illness

Mrs. Jane White, wife of former Gov. Horace White, for many years a leader in the social, charitable and civic life of Syracuse, died at the family home, 742 James Street, at 8:45 A.M. Wednesday. She was stricken on Sept. 15 with an attack of acute indigestion that brought on a heart condition which proved fatal. She and the former Governor had returned to Syracuse from their summer home on Fox Island, Lake Ontario, for State Fair week. From the time the heart ailment developed her condition was regarded as critical. Governor White and Mrs. Marion Merrill Denison Forbes, Mrs. White's only daughter, were with her at the time of the death. Mrs. Forbes had recently returned from a year's trip to South America. Mrs. White was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Lines. Her mother before marriage was Miss Jane Hatfield Simmons. Mr. Lines was a carriage manufacturer in Syracuse until his death in 1910. Mrs. White became the bride of Mr. White, March 14, 1903, when he was serving as State senator. She married him two years after the death of her first husband, Charles A. Denison of Syracuse in 1901. Mrs. White was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church and active in the promotion of its organizations. She also maintained membership with the Harmony Circle of Syracuse Memorial Hospital. Up to the time of her death Mrs. White maintained a very active interest in the outdoors, and was an ardent angler and croquet player. Her chief interest in later years had been in the summer home at Fox Island where a circle of friends participated in these sports with her. Throughout her husband's official career, which included service as Senator, lieutenant governor and governor, Mrs. White was a great social favorite in Albany. The White home in James Street was the scene of many interesting entertainments for distinguished visitors. Mr. and Mrs. White had traveled widely, making occasional trips to Europe and going to New York City every autumn for several weeks. Mrs. White is survived by her husband and a daughter. Private funeral services are being planned for Saturday afternoon at the family residence with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
