About Janet Balch
Janet Jacks Balch was from the very wealthy Monterey family of David Jacks. Jacks immigrated from Scotland and traveled to California for the gold rush in 1849. He became a large landowner in Monterey, California.
Janet Jacks met Allan Balch at Cornell University which she was attending for graduate school after her honors program at the University of the Pacific. The story goes, that Janet met Allan when he fixed her horse's shoe at the school blacksmith shop. Balch was a promising engineering student from upstate New York. They married in 1891 and moved to the Northwest and then California, where Allan Balch (with help from David Jacks) founded electric companies for the west coast. Balch became wealthy in his own right, and together, Allan and Janet were very generous contributors to Education and the Arts.
They were important early contributors to Caltech, Cornell, Scripps College, LA County Museum of Art, the Hollywood Bowl, and many other endeavors.
