Smithback, Janet Elaine MADISON - Janet Elaine Smithback, age 68, of Madison, died on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born on April 17, 1933, in Deerfielcl, Wis., the daughter of Sadolph and Margaret (Berge) Hagen. Janet graduated from Cambridge High School in 1951 and then married Albert. Smithback on Nov. 7, 1953. She retired in 1996 from the Madison School District, where she worked in food service for more than 25 years. She was a member of Lake Edge Lutheran Church and its quilters group. Janet was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Al; a son, Michael S. (Julie) Smithback of Krakow, Wis., and their children, Alex and Emily; a daughter, Sally K. (Scott) Nordenstrom of DeForest and their children, Jake, Brady, Jenna and Reagan; a brother, Jerry Hagen of Middleton; two sisters, Arlene Prochnow and Shirley Johnson, both of Cambridge; nieces, nephews and other family. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a granddaughter, Kayla Jan Nordenstrom. Funeral services will be held at LAKE EDGE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4032 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, with the Rev. Richard Blomker officiating, Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Friends may call at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, from 5 p.m. until 0 p.m, on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare and the American Cancer Society. Janet was a kind, loving wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend. She will be in our hearts forever.
