About Janny Scott
Janny Scott is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and biographer.
She worked for the New York Times from 1994 to 2009 as a reporter. Previous jobs included Boston Magazine, the Bergen Record, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times.
Scott is the author of the non-fiction books A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama's Mother (2011) and The Beneficiary: Fortune, Misfortune, and the Story of My Father (2019).
In The Beneficiary and subsequent media coverage and public appearances, Scott has discussed at length her family history and upbringing as part of Philadelphia's financial and cultural elite. Her ancestors come from the city's old guard for many generations.
