About Jean Boutyette

  • Jean's birth and death information are available at "Massachusetts Death Index, 1970-2003", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VZRZ-M97 : 13 June 2019), Jean Boutyette, 2001.
  • In the 1930 United States census for Block 89 of San Francisco (which was enumerated on 11 April), Jean's mother, Alberta May Wright and her husband Donald Boutyette noted that they were 25 years old and got married when they were 24 years old; that is, in 1929. Yet, Jean was born in January 1922: he was seven years old when Alberta and Donald were married.
  • In the 1940 United States census for ED 31-881, A.D. 10 of Manhattan, New York County, New York (enumerated on 29 April and 1 May 1940) Jean was residing in the household of William and Alberta Morwood, was William's step-son, male, white, age 18, single, and born in Washington state. See "United States Census, 1940," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQT6-36L : 28 July 2019), Jean Boutyette in household of William Morwood, Assembly District 10, Manhattan, New York City, New York, New York, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 31-881, sheet 66B, line 72, family 540, Sixteenth Census of the United States, 1940, NARA digital publication T627. Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790 - 2007, RG 29. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, roll 2644.
  • These questions arise:
    • Was Donald Boutyette the biological father of Jean, when Jean was born in 1922? This researcher [Paul Alan Fine] believes "no". Alberta Wright married John von Schnoble in 1922, divorced him in 1923, and had a children with John. I believe that their child was Jean (which is "John" in French), and that Jean's birth surname was von Schnoble. When Donald Boutyette and Alberta were married in 1929, Donald most likely conferred his surname on the 7-year-old Jean, which Jean used throughout his life.
  • Jean was employed as a seaman during the 1940s:
    • Aboard the U.S.A.T. [United States Army Transport] Shawnee, sailing from Oran, Algeria on 24 March 1943 to Brooklyn, New York and arriving there on 5 April 1943, Jean was listed as being 21 years old; born on 21 January 1922 in Seattle, Washington; and residing at 34½ Barrow Street in New York City. See "New York, New York Passenger and Crew Lists, 1909, 1925-1957," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2H99-X6J : 15 March 2018), Jean Boutyette, 1943; citing Immigration, New York City, New York, United States, NARA microfilm publication T715 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).
    • Aboard the S.S. Arickaree, arriving at the Port of New York on 6 October 1943 from Mamonal (Cartegena Bay), Colombia, Jean was listed as a junior third mate, with a length of service of nine months at sea. He was 5-feet, 7-inches tall and weighed 155 lbs. See "New York, New York Passenger and Crew Lists, 1909, 1925-1957," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2H9F-WJT : 15 March 2018), Jean Boutyette, 1943; citing Immigration, New York City, New York, United States, NARA microfilm publication T715 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).
    • Aboard the M.S. John Ericsson, arriving in New York, New York on 9 June 1944 from Liverpool, England (from which the ship departed on 28 May 1944), Jean was an able-bodied seaman, age 22, 5-feet, 7 1/2-inches tall.
  • Jean's life as a Merchant Marine seaman in the early 1940s was used by his stepfather, William Morwood, as the basis for William's scripts for the radio series, "Chips Davis, Commando" and "Convoy to America" on CBS radio. See the Mason City Globe-Gazette, Mason City, Ia., Thursday, May 20, 1943, page 2.
