About Jean (Genevieve) Rogan

Jean Quinn Rogan, 94, a lifelong resident of Archbald, passed away on May 18, 2014, at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center, Scranton, while comforted by her loving family. She was the widow of John P. Rogan, who passed away in 1967.

Born in Archbald, Jean (Genevieve) was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nora Holmes Quinn. At age 16, she graduated from Archbald High School as salutatorian of the class of 1936, and at age 20 she graduated from Marywood College as valedictorian of the class of 1940. She later earned a master's degree in education from Marywood College. Jean was a veteran teacher, and was one of Pennsylvania's pioneer special education teachers. She had been employed by the Archbald School District, by the Lackawanna County School System and by the Northeast Educational Intermediate Unit. In retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Valley View School District. For a time early in her teaching career, Jean was raising her 10 children, teaching special education full time and studying for her master's degree.

Jean was a member of the Marywood College Alumni Association and of Christ the King Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was an avid reader of books and a dedicated piano player well into her 90s. She closely followed national, state and local politics. And she loved to watch professional golf and college football, especially University of Miami football. Most of all, she enjoyed gatherings where she was surrounded by her large, loving and proud family.

Jean was a private person who devoted her life to her husband, to her children and to her special students.

Her 10 children survive her, including John Rogan and wife, Paulette Rogan, Columbia, S.C.; Noreen Rogan McGahn and husband, Donald McGahn, Brigantine, N.J.; Dr. Joseph Rogan and wife, Elaine Rogan, Eynon, Pa.; Kevin Rogan and wife, Toni Rogan, Mountain Top, Pa.; Francis Rogan, Houston, Texas; attorney Patrick Rogan and wife, attorney Julia Munley Rogan, Clarks Summit, Pa.; Michael Rogan and wife, Judy Rogan, Archbald, Pa.; Laurie Rogan, Manitou Springs, Colo.; Peggy Rogan Scholl and husband, John Scholl, Hopkinton, N.H.; and Kathy Rogan Lenahan and husband, Robert Lenahan, Dallas, Pa.

Her 12 grandchildren also survive her, including attorney Donald McGahn, David Rogan, Donald McGahn III, Lenore Rogan Antonetti, Dr. Maria Rogan Griffin, attorney Lauren Rogan Brend, attorney Kaitlin Rogan, Kelly Lenahan Mulhern, Quinn Rogan, Robert Lenahan, Connor Lenahan and Shane Rogan. And her eight great-grandchildren survive her, including Carter Rogan, Gian Antonetti, Francisco Antonetti, Samantha Antonetti, Maddie McGahn, Sabrina McGahn, Daniel McGahn III and Daniel Patrick Mulhern.

She also is survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Quinn, Archbald; and by her nieces and nephews, Dick Cawley, Kathleen Cawley, Anne Quinn Butler, John Quinn, Tom Quinn and Rick Rippon.

In addition to her husband, Jean was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph Quinn and Thomas Quinn; by her sister, Geraldine Quinn Cawley and husband, Richard Cawley; by her sister, Margaret Quinn Coyne and husband, Leo Coyne; by her sister-in-law, Catherine Rogan Rippon and husband, Richard Rippon; by her sister-in-law, Margaret Rogan; by her nephew, Anthony Cawley, all of Archbald; and by her niece, Luanne Rippon Bonner, Scranton.

Jean's family thanks the dedicated staff of Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center, First Floor, for their extraordinary care during the last five months.

A Mass celebrating Jean's life will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 10 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Christ the King Parish, 411 Church St., Archbald. Friends may call at the Harrison Funeral Home, 374 Main St., Archbald, on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Interment will be at Christ the King Parish Cemetery, Archbald.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jean's memory to support the efforts for peace and justice of the Rev. Bill Pickard, in care of the Diocese of Scranton, and to support the efforts to feed the unfortunate among us of Monsignor Joseph Kelly, in care of the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, Scranton, and of the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, Wilkes-Barre.
