About Jean Hamilton

JEAN HAMILTON (OTHERWISE JANE HAMILTON)

Jean Hamilton may be the sister of James Hamilton, late Bailie of Glasgow. In the last will and testament of her husband, Malcolm Fleming of Cardarroch, which was drawn up at Cardarroch House on 16 February 1660, James Hamilton, late bailie of Glasgow, is identified as the uncle of Jean Fleming, Malcolm's youngest child [National Archives of Scotland, H. M. General Register house, Edinburgh, Commissary Records of Hamilton and Campsie, The Testament Testamentar of Malcome Fleyming of Cardarroch, reference CC10/5/7].

The Question of Ancestry

John Anderson appears to identify Jean Hamilton with Jane Hamilton, the daughter of John Hamilton of Airdrie, but he has her married to John Fleming of Cardarroch, rather than Malcolm Fleming of Cardarroch [John Anderson, Historical and Genealogical Memoirs of the House of Hamilton with Genealogical Memoirs of the Several Branches (John Anderson, junior, Edinburgh MDCCCXXV), p.360 for the family of John Hamilton of Airdrie and his wife Janet Hamilton https://archive.org/stream/historicalgeneal00ande#page/360/mode/1up

Lieutenant-Colonel George Hamilton follows Anderson's suggestion for Jane Hamilton but adds a sister named Marion Hamilton to the equation. According to him Marion Hamilton was party to a deed which was registered in 1664. He cites XI Deeds Durie, 46. He continues, Marion Hamilton: "Styled sister of James Hamilton, late bailie of Glasgow, wife of Malcolm Fleming of Cardarroch, she died on 29 June 1665". The Colonel cites Anderson for the date of her death but James Anderson makes no mention of her [Lieutenant-Colonel George Hamilton, The House of Hamilton (Edinburgh, 1933), pages 704-7 for the family of John Hanilton of Airdrie (1569-1648). His daughters Jane and Marion are treated on page707].

Death

Jean Hamilton was alive on 7 June 1634, the date upon which her husband gave her the lands of Wester Muckroft in liferent [Matthew Livingstone, F.S.A. Scot., A Calendar of Charters and Other Writs Relating to Land and Beneficies in Scotland in Possession of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, pp. 367-8] https://archive.org/stream/calendarofcharte00liviuoft#page/367/mode... but she is not mentioned in her husband's last will and testament dated 16 February 1660 and may have died before that date [National Archives of Scotland, H. M. General Register house, Edinburgh, Commissary Records of Hamilton and Campsie, The Testament Testamentar of Malcome Fleyming of Cardarroch, reference CC10/5/7].

Marriage

Jean Hamilton married Malcolm Fleming of Cardarroch before 7 June 1634, the date upon which her husband gave her the twenty-six shilling eight penny lands of Wester Muckroft in liferent. The Archbishop of Glasgow gave her a charter confirming her liferent grant on 28 October 1635 [Matthew Livingstone, F.S.A. Scot., A Calendar of Charters and Other Writs Relating to Land and Beneficies in Scotland in Possession of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, pp. 367-8] https://archive.org/stream/calendarofcharte00liviuoft#page/367/mode...
