About Jean Mercer

Jan (or John) Mercier, Born about 1555 in Tournai, Tournai, Hainaut, Belgium, died on 3 Jan 1626 as recorded in the parish records of St. Julien's Southampton, the Huguenot French church.[1]. He was the son of Jehan Le Mercier and Peronne DeLaHoue.

He married Jane (Jeanne) Le Clerc, who was born about 1559 in Valenchinne, Les Deux, Normandy, France the daughter of Arnoul LeClerc & Jenna Lippensen, wealthy merchants in the town of Valenchinne. They were Huguenots (Protestants) caught in the Religious Wars of the times and ended up in Belgium & Switzerland.

Jean Mercier lived in England where his children was born. There he was known as Jan Mercer. The children born in England were christened under the name of Mercer rather than Mercier or Le Mercier.


Nathaniel Batchelder married first Hester Mercer, daughter of Jean and Jeanne (leClerc) Mercer, or Mercier. She was baptized in the French or Walloon church at Southampton 1 Aug 1602. Her family belonged to the Wallon refugees driven from the Spanish Netherlands by the persecutions of the Duke of Alba. (See the records of this church published by the London Huguenot Society).
