Jeanette Sutherland

Jeanette Sutherland was born to David and Jane Menzies Sutherland on December 23, 1825 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Jeanette came with her family from Scotland to join LDS members at Nauvoo, Illinois. After Joseph Smith was murdered the church split with some following Brigham Young to Utah and some following Lyman Wight to Texas. Sutherlands went with Lyman Wight.

Both of Jeanette's parents died on the overland trip to Texas. (See their memorial)

According to several sources, Jeanette married Ezra Alpheus Chipman in Central Texas on April 16, 1847. However, there is some confusion on her marriage date as a Bexar County marriage record shows they were married April 6, 1868.

Children born to Ezra and Jeanette were: Malinda Melissa who married Oscar D. Johnson, Rufana Jane who married Thomas A. Laxson, David Alexander who married Harriet Hamilton, Robert Alpheus who first married Maggie Lee Bell and second married Carrie Bell Hamilton, Irene Marion who married Adam Wilson, Jeanette Armenia who married Willie Hamilton, Flora Rosa who married John Olliff, Mary Bernice who married James Lewis, and Ezra Orson married Blanche Joiner.

Jeanette passed away in Bandera, Texas April 8, 1887 and is buried in the Bandera Cemetery.

Jeanette's information was obtained from a biography of Ezra Alpheus Chipman in "The Family Tree" a publication from Bandera County, Texas, marriage certificate and cemetery records.
