About Jefferson Perry Lay

Jefferson Perry Lay is the only child of Harrison and Susan Lay that has been traced precisely. He joined the United States Army during the Civil War, although his father, Harrison L. Lay, fought for the Confederate States Army.

During the Civil War, it is unclear what happened to Jefferson's mother Susan, and his siblings. Almost no records have been found for them. They might have been killed during the war. Missouri ws very divided in their loyalties during the war and in Northeast Missouri, where the Lays lived, there were a lot of hostilities toward southern sympathizers. Many civilians were killed in the area.

Jefferson Perry Lay was born between 1842 and 1844 in Pulaski Co KY, most likely in Somerset, and moved with his parents, Harrison Lay and Susan Woolsey, to Troy, Lincoln Co MO when he was about 10 years old.

Jefferson joined the US army on August 8, 1864 at Troy, MO for a period of one year. He stated he was a farmer by occupation and that he was 21 years old. He had black eyes, black hair, a dark complexion, and he was 5 feet, 6 inches tall. He mustered in on September 14, 1864 at Warrenton, MO.

Although the examining doctor certified him "free of all bodily defects" in August, by October 31, 1864, he was listed as absent and "sick at Jefferson Hospital."

He died in the Jefferson City US Army General Hospital on the morning of November 26, 1864 from typhoid fever, only a few weeks after he mustered in. A funeral was held at 3:00 pm the same day when he was interred at the Jefferson National Cemetery.

There are at least two more soldiers buried in this cemetery with the same date of death, Humphrey Davis, and Henry Harrington.

Although Jefferson was a Union soldier, his father, Harrison, was a Confederate soldier. I have been unable to trace Jefferson's mother, Susan, and Jefferson's siblings past the 1860 census. His father, Harrison, was wounded in the war but survived, and was married twice more in his lifetime.
