About Jefferson Davis Womack

Jefferson Davis Womack was born in 1848 in Copiah Co., MS. He was named Samuel at birth by his parents, Jacob Womack and Martha Keziah (Middleton) Womack, but due to the fervor of the approaching Civil War and the popularity in the South of Jefferson Davis, J.D. chose to become Jefferson Davis Womack and he remained so for the rest of his life. J. D. married Alamansa Matilda Ann Norman on 2 Oct 1869 in Copiah Co., MS. He had followed his brothers into the Civil War at age 13 1/2 and was captured and imprisoned when he was 16. After signing an Oath of Allegiance to the Union, he was permitted to return home. HIs father, Jacob, had died in 1857 and his mother in 1864. The family plantation was left to his eldest half-sister, Rebecca Womack and her husband, Thomas J. Ramsey. Deciding to seek better opportunities for his young family, J.D. set off for Texas with his young bride riding in a two-wheeled cart laden with all their belongings. Their first child was born along the way in Collin Co., TX and the family set down roots near Dublin, Erath Co., TX. J. D. was a farmer. Most of their children were born in TX until the family moved on into the Chickasaw Indian Territory of OK. The rest of their ten children were born in OK. Wife Matilda died in Swan, Smith Co., TX in 1918 and J.D. followed his children to the Imperial Valley of CA where there was reportedly excellent cotton farming land. He returned to McClain Co. OK in 1930 via train to visit his daughter, Gracey, when he was stricken and died on 24 Jul 1930 at 82 years in age. He is buried in the Washington Cemetery, McClain Co., OK.
