About Jeremiah Letheridge
Jeremiah was a convict. He had been convicted in the Old Bailey on 9 May 1836 of stealing a silk handkerchief. Although he had no previous convictions, he was sentenced to seven years transportation. Records state that he arrived in NSW on the "John IV" on 7 February 1837, was 33 years old, literate, a Roman Catholic and was married with one child. He came from Port Isaac.
Eight years after arriving, Jeremiah declared himself a bachelor and married Saraj Hillier, a widow, at Gosford, on 31 March 1845. She too was a conivct, having pawned stolen property. Sarah died on 3 November 1847.
Jeremiah became a butcher at 175 Sussex St but was declared bankrupt in February 1858. In 1860, he was listed at a boarding house at 184 Sussex St.
