Biography

About 1575, a puritan informer from Shrewsbury wrote to the authorities:

now lately by credible report Sir Thomas Stanley is come to dwell in this country, and many papists gentlemen resort unto him, Mr. Ferm’ and others. It is highly likely that the reference is to Fermor’s brother Thomas, whose connexion with Sir Thomas Stanley, brother of the 4th Earl of Derby, provides an explanation for Fermor’s return for Brackley, which the Stanleys owned. Still, Fermor, though a younger son, was himself of some standing in the county, and his brother-in-law Sir Richard Knightley was knight of the shire in the same Parliament.

Fermor was assessed for the subsidy of 1600 at 20s. on £5 worth of lands. At about the same time the muster returns show him as responsible for one light horse. He owned land in Oxfordshire and Worcestershire as well as in Northamptonshire. He died 7 Sept. 1602, leaving his property to his wife, the sole executrix, and legacies of £50 or £100 to several nephews and their sons and daughters. A few named servants received £5 or 20 marks, and all those in his household were to be paid a year’s wages.
