Jerry Engelbrecht (1981 – 2013)

Brief overview:

Jerry (32), an ADT Security Officer, was shot and killed when responding to an alarm that was triggered at a business in Pretoria north, on Sunday 10th November 2013. He managed to shoot two of three suspected burglars, wounding one and killing the other.

"According to Mike Kidson, managing director of ADT Northern Region, Engelbrecht parked his vehicle a safe distance from the entrance and went to inspect the premises and while attempting to gain access to the premises he discovered that the gate was malfunctioning. “He completed an inspection report and returned to his vehicle. As he approached the vehicle, three suspects were hiding behind the vehicle and opened fire on the officer.” He said that Engelbrecht returned fire, hitting two of the suspects. “He was wounded in his right side.”

Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said that the two criminals who escaped are still at large. A case of murder and attempted robbery has been opened and investigations are underway.

"Jerry’s younger brother, Richard, said that he has many fond memories of his brother, as they were very close. He explained that Jerry had a passion for cricket and that he was happiest playing the sport. “The last time I saw him was a few months ago, but we spent so much time together. He was a very straightforward man, he taught me not be afraid to speak my mind.”
