JESSE W. CROSS.

Mr. Jesse W. Cross, an old resident of this town, passed peacefully away Tuesday night, February 26th, after a long and painful illness. Mr. Cross was born July 31, 1810, one mile west of this village, on the farm now occupied by Henry C. Twitchell, and has always been a resident of tlm county.

He was well known throughout northern New York, having been associated with his brother, the late Charles H. Cross, in surveying many of the lands in Redfield, Osoeola and other towns of Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties, and was an undoubted authority in many things relating to the wild lands and early history of these oounties. He was an expert fly fisherman and almost as well acquainted with the favorite hiding places in the waters of Salmon River and its tributaries as the finny tribes themselves.

Mr. Cross was a member of the masonic order for forty-six years, having been a member of Mexico Lodge, F. and A. M., No. 135, from which he was admitted for the purpose of forming Pulaski Lodge, No. 415.

In 1802 Mr. Cross was married to Augusta E. Butterfield, of Mexico, who, with their only child, Carrie A., survives him.

The funeral of Mr. Cross occurred Saturday, Mar. 2, at his late residence on Jefferson Ave., with the honors of the Masonic fraternity. Six old friends and neighbors, Hon. N.B. Smith, Capt. C.H. Ripsom, Dr. F.S. Low, Messrs. S.D. Moore, L.D. Potter and Henry H. Lyman, of Oswego, officiated as bearers.
