About Jesse White Fortson
He served in the 38th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Confederate Army, in the Civil War and died of typhoid fever during the war. Two fellow soldiers, Henry R. Deadwyler and Thomas Thornton, buried him under an apple tree. One source says that he died on 22 Jul 1862, served in the Confederate Army, and is buried at Dove's Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Elbert County, Georgia. Another source also says he is buried at Dove's Creek
The records of the Georgia Department of Archives and History reflect that on 3 Apr 1891 Sophia B. Fortson, widow of Jesse W. Fortson, completed an affidavit before the Ordinary of Elbert Co., GA indicating that Jesse W. Fortson was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States and served as a member of Co. F, 38th Regiment of GA Volunteers, that he enlisted in May, 1862, and was in the Virginia Army up to July 1862 when he contracted fever and died within eight days. Other affidavits she signed indicated he died at Staunton, VA. The Archives records reflect she received a Widow's Pension through 1905.
