Jesse Gentry had two families. It would appear that Elizabeth, born of his first wife was possibly the last child of that marriage. According to other family genealogists, a son, Jesse Jr.'s birth date has not been established. He could be from either the first marriage of his father, or a product of the second. The birth date of Elizabeth was established by the 1850 Census of Anderson County, Tennessee, at which time her age was listed as fifty four years. The birth date of Elizabeth's brother, Issac is listed in other family histories as about 1799, and that he was from the second marriage of father Jesse.
It would appear without doubt that the Mitchell's, the Gentry's and Taylor's entwined their respective families by marriage. Taking into account the pattern of naming offspring that was common in those early days, on can often trace family relationships by that pattern. It is noted that Martin, the son of Jesse, named one of his sons, Issac Chesley, and a daughter Locky Jane. Charles Mitchell, brother of Chesley also named a daughter Locky, an unusual name. Martin Gentry's wife was Sarah Mitchell most likely a sister to Chelsey and Charles Mitchell. Edmund Taylor, who married Sarah Jane Mitchell, daughter of Charles Mitchell, named a son Jesse Martin, presumably after his grandfather, Jesse Gentry and his uncle Martin Gentry. Edmund Taylor's mother was Elizabeth Gentry, daughter of Jesse Gentry and brother to Martin Gentry. This could also explain Aunt Marie's middle name listed on her birth certificate, it was "Jesse." We have many famous distant cousins linked to our Gentry line.
Birth: 1757 in Albemarle County, Virginia Death: 1834 in Possibly in Souther Kentucky, USA
Jesse and his brother Charles inherited by will from their grandfather, Philip Joyner of Albemarle County, Virginia, 200 acres of land each, being the same land on which the University now stands. Jesse sold his part of this land in 1783 and probably went to Tennessee. He is mentioned as a legatee in his fahter's will in 1811. It is probable that he finally settled in Southern Kentucky.
There are quite a number of Gentrys in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas who are descended from a Jesse Gentry, who was born about 1780 and lived in Kentucky, where his children were born.
