Jesse "Jess" E. Slichter

Jesse E. Slichter passed away at his home in Douglas October 4, 1962. He was born near Creston, Iowa, the eldest son of John and Sarah Slichter. Jess, as he was affectionately called by all who knew him, arrived in Converse County in the early spring of 1884. He grew to young manhood on the ranch his father had established on the North Platte River about 15 miles west of Douglas. On November 18, 1902, he married Jennie M. Austin, who has preceded him in death. When the F. H. Woodruff Seed Company erected a seed house in Douglas in 1926, Jess was the manager for the 30 years of its existence. On August 5, 1950, he married Myrtle M. Jones who survives. Other survivors include his children, Fern, Ruth, John and Eva; a brother, Charlie; a sister, Mrs. Mary Reynolds; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
