Nothing certain is known of Jesse Self's family until his marriage to Mary Jane Narramore on 02/06.1812 in Bledsoe County, TN. Residences included: Jefferson County, AL by 1815, Habersham County, GA by 1826, and Walker County, GA by 1833. His home place may have been in the area later made into Catoosa County, since that is where he died. He was a trustee at the founding of the Old Salem Methodist Church, and a lifelong member, but is only presumed to be buried here. This is much more certainly true of his wife, who died 1850.

Jesse remarried 04/26/1859 in Catoosa County to Mary Bartley (1808-1887). She had first married Michael Fillers, then Giles Burrell (both in Greene County, TN). After 1870 she married fourth to William Arthur Satterfield.

Children of Jesse and Mary were: 1. John Narramore Self (b.1813). His wife's name was Mary, and he fathered nine children before dying 1860-1870 (perhaps in the Civil War). At least the three eldest of his sons removed to AR in 1870 with their uncle Joseph Self.

2. Charity Self (b.1815), married 06/10/1833 in Habersham County, GA to Silas Bascom Robertson. She bore nine children and remained in Habersham County until her death before 1860 (when Silas appears on the census with his second wife, Charlotte).

3. Nancy Priscilla "Polly" Self (1816-1895), married abt.1833 in Habersham County to James Price "Jimmy" Standridge. They resided on the border with White County until 1855 when the family relocated to AR (the first of Jesse's kin to do so), settling in Montgomery County. Jimmy and Polly had 13 children.

4. Esther A. Self (b. 1819), m.abt.1839 in Walker County to James Asbury Pledger. They resided in Gordon County (where five of their known children were born) until relocating in 1855 to AR with her sister Polly Standridge. James and Esther had at least one more child there before he died in 1866, with her following before 1870. Record of Ester's family had been lost and forgotten by the other descendants of Jesse Self until recently, and information is still being gathered at this time (2016).

5. Elizabeth Self (b.1820), m.1834 in Walker County to John Nicholson Chastain, to whom she bore ten children. With her sisters Polly Standridge and Esther Pledger, she also removed to AR in 1855 and settled in Saline County. Elizabeth was widowed in 1879, and died before 1900.

6. Mary Alice Self (b.1821), m.abt.1841 in Walker County to William Lewis Harris who would be the administrator of Jesse's estate in 1868. their family of ten children were born in Walker and Catoosa counties, the oldest traced family of Jesse's descendants to remain in NW GA.

7. Joseph LaFayette Self (1824-1899), 1st.m.1844 in Walker County to Nancy Arminda Gartman, by whom he had five children before she died in 1854. Joseph 2nd.m. 03/25/1856 in Walker County to Mary Jane Dyke, who became the mother of his final three children. In the aftermath of the civil War, Joseph led a wagon train of about 70 related and associated families from their devastated homes in GA to settle new lands on the frontier in AR (near where three of his older sisters had removed some 15 years previously). Joseph settled in Scott County with many of these new migrants, including the family of his youngest sibling, Martha Jane Farnsworth.

8. Francis Thomas "Frank" Self (b.1826), m.abt.1844 in Walker County to Mary Ann "Polly" Satterfield. [Note: Polly's younger sister, Susan, had married John Fielding Meyers Self, who died before 1860, as did she in 1870. Susan Self's three orphaned children were among those relocating to Scott County, AR with their great-uncle, Joseph Self.] Frank and Polly remained in Catoosa County, where they both died before 1880, having raised a family of eight children.

9. William Chappell "Chap" Self (1828-1907), m.abt.1851 in Walker County to Margaret Elizabeth Moreland. They lived in Walker, Whitfield, and Catoosa Counties. Their family of eight children included an adopted grandchild, Basil.

10. Amy Ann Self (1839-1894), m.1853 Walker County to Alonzo F. Hamilton. Only two of Amy Hamilton's five known children survived to adulthood, and the family resided in Chattooga County.

11. Jesse Franklin Self (1832-1877), m. 08/06/1851 in Walker County to Elizabeth Marchel Carroll, to rear a family of eight children in Catoosa county.

12. Martha Jane Self (1836-1903), youngest of Jesse's children, m. 1853 in Walker County to Thomas Jefferson Farnsworth. [Note: Jeff's brother, George Washington Farnsworth married 2nd to Martha Ann "Nancy" Self, daughter of Joseph Self and Nancy Gartman, and so a niece to this Martha Jane Self. In addition, Jeff and George's mother was Elizabeth Bartley, a sister of the Mary (Bartley) Burrell who was jesse Self's second wife.] Jeff and Martha had six children in Walker and Catoosa Counties before relocating in 1870 to Scott County, AR with her brother Joseph. Their final three children were born there, including the youngest Nancy Leona (Farnsworth) Donham in 1876—the last save one of Jesse and Mary Self's 97 known grandchildren (the very last grandchild born was Starrett Hardin Self, son of William Chappell, born 1880).* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jun 10 2022, 18:22:19 UTC
