DEATH OF HON. J. B. STUMP; A PROMINENT POLK COUNTY STOCK BREEDER AND FARMER; WAS TWICE IN THE LEGISLATURE. One of the Most Successful and Enterprising Agriculturists in the Willamette Valley. A telephone message from Suver, received in this city yesterday afternoon by D. E. Huntsinger, the State street undertaker, announced the sudden death, at his farm home, of Hon. Jesse B. Stump. The news was unexpected as Mr. Stump has not been ill. Mr. Huntsinger at once started for the Stump farm to make arrangements for the funeral. Mrs. Clarence S. Hamilton, of this city, is a daughter of the deceased, and is at present above Cascadia, in the Cascade Mountains. Attempts were last evening made to communicate with her and give her the sad news, but up to a late hour the efforts were in vain. Mr. Stump was at work in the fields on his farm yesterday morning, when he complained of feeling bad. He went to the house, and in a few minutes later the end came, as a result of heart disease. Hon. J. B. Stump, was a native of Ohio, born September 15, 1832. He came to Oregon in 1854, driving a band of sheep and making the most of the journey on foot. Mr. Stump taught school for five years in Monmouth and then purchased a farm and began the life of an agriculturist. As with his other work he farmed in the best possible manner and soon had over 2,000 acres, a portion of which he has since sold. He erected a handsome residence in Salem, in which he lived for years, but during the past five or six years he resided on his farm. He devoted a great deal of his time to the study of public questions and was often honored by the public in positions of trust. He was a member of the State Legislature in 1867, being elected by the Republicans to that position. He was always an ardent Republican until the advent of the PeopleÂ’s Party, and believing that to be the right principle upon which a government should be conducted did not hesitate to cast aside his old party affiliations and try to forward the interests of his later convictions. He was a man who did not fear to execute his convictions of right in any measure, whether it was of the par6ty that he represented or of the opposing party. In 1898 he was again elected to the lower house of the Oregon Legislature by the Silver Republican party of Polk county, and served acceptably. He was a member of the Unitarian Society of this city, and was one of its most enthusiastic and loyal members. In 1869 Mr. Stump became a member of the Grange, and took an active interest in the order, and in 1891 he was elected treasurer of the State Grange. He was one of the organizers of the PeopleÂ’s Transportation Company, which operated two steamboats on the Willamette river for a time. During recent years he paid especial attention to the breeding of fine stock, and especially goats. In1859 Mr. Stump was happily married to Miss Martha A. Davidson, a native of Illinois, and a daughter of Carter T. Davidson. This union was blessed by one daughter and three sons. Two of the latter died in early manhood. The daughter, Jessie Belle, is the wife of Clarence S. Hamilton, of this city; the son Fred Newton Stump, is at home on the farm. Funeral arrangements are being made at Suver, but it is not yet known here what they will be. The funeral will probably not be held until Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton can be communicated with, and their return. Burial will most likely take place in the cemetery south of this city, where the two deceased sons of the family are interred. Oregon Statesman 30 August 1901 3:3 (a photo accompanies the article)

FUNERAL OF HON. J.B. STUMP Will be Held from the C. S. Hamilton Residence This Afternoon – Remains to lie in State The funeral of the late Jesse B. Stump, who expired suddenly at his farm home near Suver, on Thursday afternoon, will be held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. S. Hamilton, corner of Front and Chemeketa streets, at 2:30 o’clock this (Sunday) afternoon. Rev. W. G. Eliot, Jr., of the Unitarian church, officiating. Interment will be had in Rural Cemetery.
