About Jimmy Stewart

Racing driver and elder brother of three times World F1 Champion Jackie Stewart. James Robert Stewart was born in the hamlet of Milton, near Dumbarton, Scotland, the eldest son of Robert Paul Stewart and Jeannie Stewart. His father owned a garage and Jaguar dealership at Dumbuck, and 'tested' the customer's cars along the narrow and winding roads alongside Loch Lomond. His father bought Jimmy a C-type Jaguar sportscar which he began to race at local circuits as well as circuits in England such as Thruxton and Snetterton. Whilst doing National Service in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME), a sympathetic Commanding Officer allowed him time to race at the weekends. He became a big name in motor racing during the early 1950s but raced only once in a Grand Prix, the 1953 British GP, when he drove a Cooper-Bristol for the Scottish team Ecurie Ecosse. Nearing the end of the race, and lying in 6th place, he spun off on a wet track. He continued to race D-type Jaguars, works Aston Martins at Le Mans and Nurburgring but a couple of serious crashes, and the great worry his racing caused his mother, resulted him in retiring from the sport at an early age. Jimmy encouraged his younger brother to take up motor racing, and returned to selling cars at his father's garage as well as at other dealers however he sought solace in the bottle. For years this caused a family rift until in 1997, and with the help of his brother, he sought help and rekindled his close relationship with Jackie.
