About Joachim Heinrich Martens

Joachim apparently went to the Cape Province of South Africa from the Netherlands in 1747 as a single man and a soldier. Sources in S.A give the name of the ship as "De Kasteel van Tilburg". He married Jacomina van den Berg from Graaf Reinet. The couple settled in Eastern Cape and raised the first Maartens family in the Republic. Later the family spread out around the area and some moved up to East Griqualand and into Natal province.

Joachim Heinrick came from Brandenburg (Prussia) and arrived on 2 May 1747 on the above ship. He was hospitalized immediately on arrival, possibly with scurvy after the 3 month trip. 20 people died on this trip over. Between 1748 and 1750 he was a groom and between 1751 - 1754 a soldier. He became a free burger in 1756 and worked as a carpenter in Stellenbosch. When his oldest son Jacobus was born they were living in the Veldkornetskamp of Veldkornet S. Coetzee. Joachim Heindrich became Joachim/Jochem Hendrik as proven by his marraige certificate. Joachim died in 1770 and Jacomina in 1774. Their children were probably raised by Jacobus van den berg, Jacomina's eldest brother. Joachim and Jacomina had 4 children. (researched intensively per kind favour of Dewald Martens as source)

Joachim Heinrich Martens was born in 1727 in Brandeburg, Germany. On 2 Mei 1747 he departs with ship called "Kasteel van Tilburg" from Texel close to Amsterdam to Indie. The ship docs in the Cape (South Africa) on 22 August 1747. He is part of several people that is hospitalised due to scurvy (skeurbuik).

He stays and works for the VOC for about 10 years as a stable boy, about 1748 - 1750. He then becomes soldier in Klapmutz from 1750 - 1751 and then again stable boy from 1751 - 1756. on February 10 1756 at the age of 29 he resigns from VOC and becomes a "vryburger" in Stellenbosch where becomes a carpenter.

On August 5, 1759 at the age 32 he gets married to Jacomina van den Berg, a 23 year old girl from Stellenbosch. They got married in the Waveren Church in Tulbagh. (this church still exists today).

Joachim dies in 1774 at the age of 47 and leaves behind his 3 children, Jacobus (14), Joachim (9) and Matthys (6).

He stopped supplying an annual opgaaf to the Company in 1775, the last being in 1774. The assumption is that he stopped reporting or died during one of those years.
