About Joan Cleeve

George Cleeve married Joan Price on 7 Sept. 1618 at St Chad's, Shrewsbury.

children of George and Joan:

  1. Cleombrotus, bapt. 13 March 1621 at St. Chad’s (d. 1621); and
  2. Anne, bapt. 24 June 1623 at St. Chad’s (d. 1624).

"Today in the city of Portland, beside Eastern Parkway on one of the hills overlooking Casco Bay, there stands a tall monument in stone to George Cleeve, still regarded as the city’s founder. His had been a remarkable life, taking him from his native Somerset, to Bristol, London and Shrewsbury, and eventually across the Atlantic to the New World. And for Cleeve’s wife Joan it must, one fancies, have seemed just as remarkable, and all a long way from the Pheasant on Mardol Head, and the days when her father was the tenant there and she had quarrelled with her step-mother." "In depth" George Cleeve (c. 1586-c. 1666), vintner of the Sextry and of the Pheasant, Mardol Head.

Joan's father, John Price, thought his son-in-law George Cleve "a man of no estate or ability", and alleged that he was planning to leave her. He described Cleeve's career as "fleeting and shifting from city to city, from country to country and from place to place and prospering in none". 2

  • Gary Boyd Roberts shows a royal line for Joan Price, the second (? or third) wife of George Cleeves of Maine, from Henry I of England through Welsh families, the most recent part of the descent being in the Price of Newtown family, culminating in Joan's father John Price, vintner of Shrewsbury (fl. 1620). For this, he cites articles by John Plummer published in the Cleeves family newsletter (early 1990s). (
