About Joan Rodeghier
Joan Rodeghier had probably the most difficult life of Matt's siblings. At some point in her childhood she suffered polio or some other ailment that left her with a limp. She had a daughter born out of wedlock who was placed in some type of Catholic child care institution.
Rhoda received a call one day when she was a teenager inquiring about the whereabouts of Joan Rodeghier who happened to be in Evergreen Park on a visit from her home in California. Rhoda innocently confirmed that Joan was in Chicago at that time and would be coming to their home. Later that day or the following day Joan's daughter appeared at the Rodeghier home in Evergreen Park. Rhoda said it was a very dramatic encounter. I no longer recall whether Joan herself was there at the time or whether she just spoke with Matt and Helen. She had a very sad story of growing up in an institution where she lacked many of the material advantages that many child of the day had and - more importantly - she lacked the long-term relationships that an adoptive family could have provided. It was all a complete surprise to Rhoda - and presumably to Tony and Wendy - who did not know about Joan's child. She listened to the conversation from upstairs.
