About Grace Sherman

Joan - Called "loving sister Sherman" in 1643 will of her husband's half-brother Samuel SHERMAN. According to "Was Tobias Makin an Ancestor of the New England Shermans?", by Myrtle Stevens Hyde and Douglas Richardson, The American Genealogist 61:79-82 (July/Oct 1985), Joan was not the daughter of Tobias MAKIN, whose daughter Joan MAKIN married Richard STONE as her only husband. The 1610 will of Tobias MAKIN names Edmund SHERMAN and his son Richard SHERMAN. It is possible that Grace MAKIN, daughter of Tobias MAKIN, married an Edmund SHERMAN, but he has not been specifically identified.

Burial: Old Burying Ground Fairfield Fairfield County Connecticut, USA Created by: tcd Record added: Dec 21, 2013 Find A Grave Memorial# 121995242 -tcd

Birth: 1575 Fingringhoe, Essex, England Death: unknown/Dedham, Essex, England

In Sherman's book he states that Joan Makin is the wife of Edmund Sherman 1572-1643 and mother of his children not Joan's sister Grace Makin. It is assumed that Joan died before 1637 when Edmund came to the colonies, fore she was not listed on the passenger list, as having also come to the colonies.

It would seem that Joan was alive in 1643 based on Samuel Sherman, brother of Edmund Sherman, unlike what on Edmund's page where Samuel is called Edmunds Uncle. The statement is at least in part, misleading in that it states Grace was mentioned in Samuel's will. After reading the will, she was referred as "Sister Sherman, Edmund's widow". She is never named other than this which "proves" nothing other than she is alive. There is no reference to location, New England or England. Tobias Makin's will I have not seen. Is it or is it not as vague as Samuel's Will.

There are those that believe Joan Makin is the wife of Edmund Sherman and there are those that believe she is not. It would seem there are no new documents to examine but rather new interpretations of previously examined document.
