Joel Roper, (son of John Roper and Jane Symonds) b. 1810, bapt. 17 Sept 1810 at Chideock,,Dorset,England. He m Mary Gapper Fowler, 21 Apr 1840, in Winterborne Whitechurch,, Dorset, England, b. 1817, bapt. 24 Feb. 1818 at Abbotsbury,, Dorset, England, a daughter of Joseph Fowler and Mary Gapper; Mary d. 22 Aug 1865 aged 47, Winterborne Clenston,Dorset,England, buried with m.i.: St Nicholas ch cem, Winterborne Clenston, Dorset, England. A Joel Roper was a land-owner in Shipton Gorge in 1843 - was it this one? Joel was a yeoman farmer in Mappercombe in parish of Powerstock, Dorset (census of 1841); later, of 629 acres in Delcombe Farm in Milton Abbas, Dorset; and, lastly, of 650 acres in Winterborne Clenston, Manor Farm, in Lower Clenston (censuses of 1851 and 1861). He died 8 May 1865, aged 54, in Winterborne Clenston, Dorset, England, buried with m.i.: St Nicholas ch cem, Winterborne Clenston, Dorset; Joel and Mary had issue.
