About Joetta Loye Wohlgemuth

Our dear mom and grandma Joetta Koehn Wohlgemuth was born to Ivan and Verna Wedel Koehn on March 22, 1941 at Newton, Kansas. She peacefully passed away on February 28, 2018 at the Bethesda Hospital and entered into the presence of her Lord.

In 1952 mom moved with her family from the Lone Tree, Kansas area to near Scott City, Kansas. As the oldest child, she was a big help to her parents. Mom felt the need of salvation and found peace while the song “Blessed Assurance” was being sung. She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in March of 1952 and remained true to the vows she made to God and the Church as long as she lived.

Some years later Mom moved with her family to Mission, Texas. Since there were no youth at this new location, Mom spent several years working in Kansas. Archie and Velma Holdeman were a special uncle and aunt who provided her with a second home. During these years she also gave some time in the Mexico mission effort. She enjoyed and made life long friends while cooking for the Tucumcari unit.

While at the conference at Greenland in 1967, Mom met her future husband, Milton Wohlgemuth. They were married August 31, 1969 at Clarksdale, Mississippi by Minister Arverd Wiggers. As a new bride, Mom happily accepted Dad’s family and congregation as her own. Their home was blessed with five children.

Our Dad passed away at an early age of 41 years, leaving Mom to raise and provide for our family. Life was not easy, but she met these sorrows courageously, putting her faith in the Lord. Her motto being the “Serenity Prayer”.

We will remember Mom as a friendly, outgoing person with a big smile. She loved having company and was ready to help with needs in the congregation. She loved us children and was concerned that we would know and serve the Lord. Our sister Martha lived with Mom, keeping her company right until Mom’s death. They had many good times traveling to Brazil and Kenya as well as visiting relatives and friends in the U.S. and Canada.

Seven years ago Mom was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She again looked to the Lord for her strength and fought the disease courageously. God answered our prayers and blessed Mom with nearly five years of remission, until last fall when she was again diagnosed with cancer. The last weeks of her life as her pain increased and her health declined she longed to be free and return to her Maker.

She will be missed by her loving family. Karlene and huband Lance Goertzen, children, Stephanie, Lacey, Wynelle, and Ty, Inman, Kansas. Chester and wife Carole: children, Jade, Leighton, and Shawn, Landmark, Manitoba. Rawlin and wife Debra: children, Kyra, Payton, Gina, Makenna, and Malia, Landmark, Manitoba. Verna, and husband, Daniel Wenger: children, Jevan, Dayna, Bradley, Alyssa, and Hailey, Hesston, Kansas, Martha of Steinbach, Manitoba and a special cousin Carol Dueck and family.

Mom was preceeded in death by her husband Milton, infant granddaughter Brooklyn, her parents, parents in law, and one nephew.

We as a family want to thank Dr. Duerksen & the staff at Bethesda Hospital for their loving care. We would like to say thank you to everyone for all the prayers, meals, messages, and support given at this time.

Viewing will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Mb.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Greenland Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Greenland, Mb with burial following the service at the church cemetery.
