Emma Andersdotter and Johan Andreasson were married in 1854 and had nine children. The oldest, Anton Emil, emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 24. Of the remaining eight children, six remained and lived out their lives in Sweden. One daughter died at the age of two, and one son died at age 6. When Anton Emil left in 1884, his siblings ranged in age from 3 to 21.
Like other Nordic countries, Swedish surnames used the patronymic system of adding "son" to the father's first name for boys and "dotter" to the father's first name for girls. Johan Andreasson was son of Andreas, and Emma Andersdotter was daughter of Anders.
