About Johan Pretorius

Johan Pretorius (1975 – 2019)

Brief overview:

Johan's (44), gruesome murder 15 months ago caused widespread controversy because it was considered a farm murder.

However, police arrested his widow, Kobie (50), on the same farm on Thursday.

Another accused, Jacques Petzer (23), was arrested the same day at his workplace in Nigel.

Police and Pretorius' family suspect Kobie had an extramarital affair with 21-year-old Adam Lukas (Loekie) van Staden and that these loved ones conspired to kill Pretorius for police money.

Van Staden was first arrested and convicted of murder in the High Court in Pretoria last week.

Van Staden was a longtime friend of Petzer. He also lived on the farm where they farmed with pigs.

Pretorius, a dairy expert, worked for Limpopo Dairies for the last 18 months of his life and only visited his wife and six-year-old adopted daughter on the farm on weekends.

Pretorius and Kobie were married for 16 years and Kobie was also a stepmother to a 20-year-old boy from Pretorius' previous marriage.

Unis Pretorius, Johan's brother, says they are delighted with the arrests.

"We are grateful that justice is being done."

He says the past 15 months have been hell for them because Kobie roamed free while they suspected she might have been involved in the murder.

He says his family heard from people after Pretorius' death that they had seen Kobie and van Staden in Nigel walking hand in hand around the town.

"We were suspicious when she avoided us after Johan's death. She moved to Nigel shortly after his death and went to live in the town. She then broke all contact. We tried to keep in touch with their daughter, but Kobie blocked us. She changed her cell phone number and asked people we know not to give it to us. The last time we saw Kobie was at Johan's funeral. ”

She later moved back to her father's farm.

Unis says it was difficult for the family to hear the evidence in court last week that Pretorius was brutally murdered.

"It came out in court that he was stabbed with a spear."

Unis says farmers are still talking about his brother's murder which caused unnecessary tension in the agricultural community. "The mood was then at a breaking point. I had to persuade guys that he was not killed in a farm attack. People are still bitter that they have been led around the bush.
