Brief overview:
For a cellphone, purse and a bakkie, 40-year-old Johan Strydom was brutally hit with an iron bar at his farm's yard gate over the weekend and dragged to a warehouse with his bakkie.
Guests arriving for a barbecue on the farm in the Buffelshoek area outside Paris over the weekend found the host's body with a chain around his ankles.
The murderer allegedly hit Strydom with the iron bar at the yard gate on Saturday at about 13:00, Lt. Col. Northwest Police spokesman Lesego Metsi said.
Strydom was then dragged to the warehouse with his Mazda Drifter bakkie.
Metsi said the killer then closed the warehouse door and fled with the bakkie and Strydom's cellphone and wallet.
The bakkie was found abandoned in Potchefstroom on Saturday and a 21-year-old man was arrested. He led police to two more men, but they are not linked to the murder at this stage.
Ernst Meiring, who was with Strydom in the Duet congregation in Potchefstroom, said he and another friend found the body when they arrived for the braai.
"We were looking for him because he wasn't there and he fixed us up. We found him in the store. "
Jurie Schoeman, a close friend of Strydom and one of the first people on the scene, said there was a chain tied around Strydom's ankles.
“Johan's hands were very bruised. We reckon he fought back. He was such a good person. We don't understand why this happened. ”
Schoeman said Strydom would testify in court later this month after he recently raided a burglar in his aunt, Martie Strydom, on the neighboring farm.
The man, one of Martie Strydom's former employees, reportedly went back to work with her last week after he was released on bail.
Police have arrested the 21-year-old suspect on a neighboring farm, Metsi said. The man then went to show himself his bloodied clothes to the police where he threw it in a toilet.
The other two suspects were arrested yesterday morning after police found Strydom's stolen property in their possession.
