Johan Slabbert (1982 - 2005)

Brief overview:

Johan (22), a Police Constable from Krugersdorp, was shot in the head during an armed robbery when he and a colleague were dispatched to the Pick n Pay supermarket at the Princess Centre in Roodepoort, on 24th April 2005. Johan was transferred to the Milpark Hospital, where he passed away a few days later on 28th April.

A shootout between a gang of eight robbers and the police ensued. One of the robbers was shot in the chest and died outside the shop. Another accomplice was wounded. According to police spokesperson Yolande Bouwer a wounded robber was arrested shortly after the attack. The other robbers fled with the rest of the loot.

Eyewitness, Lorainne Nolte said; "It was terrible. I was standing at the till, ready to pay, when I suddenly heard a loud crack, at first I thought it was a cracker, but an elderly man threw himself on top of me. And then the bullets started flying." "It was really horrible. People screamed and parents tried to protect their children. I just stayed where I was, with the old gentlemen on top of me. "I wish I could thank him because he protected me, but I don't know what he looks like."

Johan had only been married for just over four months when he was killed.
