Brief overview:
Johan (22), manager of a liquor store in President Steyn Street, Pretoria, was shot in the head when he went to assist a man being hijacked, on 5th March 2008. Johan was taken to the Akasia Hospital in Pretoria, but declared brain dead on 11th March, and the life support machines were turned off.
"Parents, Piet (45) and Karin (39), agreed yesterday that the machines that have kept him alive since Wednesday were turned off at 15h20."
Rodnay Bodenstein (75), the man Johan tried to help, was shot in the upper body and leg. "I walked back to my van, got in I just wanted to close the door when a man with a child of probably 10 or 12 years appeared at my door. The man said: 'Old boss, I'm telling you to get out." He starting shouting at the man, and that's when Johan ran out of the store. "He shot me in the leg. Johan then came running out and the next moment the hijacker shot him. I just saw Johan collapse."
Mrs. Marlize Bischoff (23), Johan's sister, tearfully told that her brother always helped and loved everyone was for people. "He gave his life for someone." She said Johan was fighting for his life until Tuesday. "He responded when we spoke to him, but on Wednesday the swelling started on his brain, he developed a high fever and high blood pressure and was declared brain dead."
