About Johan Gustaf Sundblom

Hade 2 döttrar och en son. ( From The Longreach Leader Saturday, Jan 13, 1934 page 15 (JG): The death occurred in the Longreach Hospital on Sunday of Mr.John Gustavas Sundblom, who had been in failing health for the past 10 weeks, 4 of which had been spent in hospital. Deceased was born at Ailand Island, Sweden in 1857, and came to Australia 45 years ago, landing in Rockhampton, from where he travelled west to enter the employ of Mr. Steve Fairbairn on Beaconsfield, where he was employed principally working on pumping plants and at the washpool. After being on Beaconsfield for some time he was employed at Wellshot Station at their washpool. Later he came to Longreach and took up his residence on the Thomson River where he resided until his last illness compelled him to come into town to live with his son at North Longreach. No one knew the Thomson River and its, channels better than the late Mr. Sundblom. He had experience of all the big floods in the river taking part in many thrilling rescues one of which he vividly remembered when in company with, Mr.Thomas Woulfe, he rescued Mr. J.T. Smith and his family in the1906 flood, one of the biggest floods known in the river. The river rose about ten feet in a couple, of hours and on a dark night, accompanied by Mr. Woulfe, a police sargeant and a policeman,Mr. and Mrs. Smith and his family, who lived about 4 miles from town, were removed from their perilous position without incident. Another big job he often referred to was bringing across Mr. J. H Fairfax, now a resident of Sydney, then on Dalmore. Although Mr. Sundblom was one of the cleverest handlers of a boat on the river, he could not swim a stroke. During his residence on the Thomson River he carried on fishing for a living and also ran a steam launch the engine for which he, constructed himself. He also put in a few years driving at the West Longreach works at the time Mr. J. B. Cramste was in charge, when the boiling down and meat extract plant was in operation. The late Mr. Sundblom was connected with the initial making of ice in Longreach, being engine driving for Conaghan Bros. who erected the first ice plant in Longreach on the corner opposite the town bore. He later was employed on the same plant by the late Mr. J. M. Savage after the latter had purchased it from Conaghan Bros. and removed the works to a site at the back of the butchers shop at present owned by F. & D. Walz. Prior to coming out west Mr. Sundblom had done a great deal of sailing being a sailor on the old sailing boats in which he travelled all round Australia. Mrs. Sundblom predeceased her husband about 12 months ago. A son. Mr. J. J. Sundblom, resides in North Longreach. The funeral left the Church of England on Monday afternoon, the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Eric L.R. Gribble. --- According to Naturalization appl. John Gustav was born 24 June 1858 in Aland Island, Sweden. Father Gustaf Adolf Sundblomand monther Finnish.

John Gustav came to Australia Feb 1883 with the sailing ship Mellpomene from England. Before he came to Australia he worked 3 years as Ablebodied seaman on sailing ships. In Australia he lived 9 years in Barcaldine and 35 years in Longreach.
