About George Lenhart

Born Johann Georg Leonhard. George is in the DAR Patriotic Index, p. 410, #441468. In the Revolutionary War, he was a private in the 3rd PA Battalion, 5th Co., York Co., under Capt. Gould.

Four of his children were baptised in York Co., PA, the first one in 1767.

George is left thirty pounds by his father in his 21 March 1774 will, York Co., PA.

In "Early German Settlers of York Co., PA" by Keith Dull, pg 141-143: Wife possibly "Kramer. Moved from Dover Township to Newberry Twp. bet. 1777 and 1779, and to Monaghan twp bet. 1779 and 1783. Moved to Somerset bet. 1783 and 1784.

On tax list of Monaghan Twp., York Co. in 1783, for 100 acres (78 lb.) Resided in Somerset Co. by 1789. On 10 Sept., 1790, he received a tract of 390 and one-forth acres granted by patent, land located on Cox's Creek and Middle Creek in Milford Twp. - (Deed Abstracts in Somerset Co., PA - Book I, p. 123.) In 1790 Census, p. 24, Bedford (Somerset) Co. On the 14th of April, 1792 he deeded 38 and one-half acres "whereon John Weimer (husband of daughter Susanna) now lives, adjoining lands of George Werline and Joseph Anthony, to John Weimer, Jr., both of Milford Twp., Bedford (Somerset) Co." Price was 38 pounds - (Deed Abstracts, Book I, p. 123.) Deeds written in old German script.

In Somerset, he went to the Berlin Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Church. He and Catherine are listed as communicants at Salem Evan. Luth. Church on Easter 1790, also Susanna and Catharina.

Estate settled in 1797, filed 24 Sept., 1797, recorded 1800, Milford Twp. Eva petitioned for guardian. Son George had Estate #25 in March 18, 1805, to settle guardianship of George - Abraham Cable.

There is a Lenhart Burial Ground in Jefferson Twp., Somerset Co. (No George or Catherine.) Cemetery is on private property owned by Thomas and Ruth Barron. On old maps, it was on the Leroy Baron Farm. Their farm is at the cross roads of Township Road 859 and Township Road 583. The farm is about 1 mile northwest of Laurelridge Lake/Sports L. Two miles northwest of Lavansville.
