About Johanna Gorman
Johanna was eleven when her father died. Her mother was widowed with six children, Johanna being the eldest. There were no state benefits so Molly as her mother was known worked to keep her six children alive. Four of the six went to second level schools and two including Johanna went to Third Level thanks to the clergy, the nuns and Christian Brothers. One of the American Dunnes wanted to bring her to the U.S. but she refused to go. It was unusual for girls to go to University so Johanna was ahead of her time, helped by a University scholarship. She felt that this was hard on her mother who had to supplement this with hard-earned money to help her to live in Dublin and to travel home for holidays. When she completed her studies she returned home and taught until her marriage in Holy Faith Convent Rosbercon, Co. Kilkenny.
