John A. Odom's Timeline

COMMENT BY ELIZABETH SHOWN MILLS:
John A. appears in the parental household on the census of 1880, which places his birth in Mississippi between 2 June 1872 and 1 June 1873. In 1870 his parents lived near Aberdeen in Monroe County; by 1880 they resided in Oktibbeha. Their location at the time of his birth is not known.

The 1890 census is missing. By 1900 he had died.

COMMENT BY ELIZABETH SHOWN MILLS

Lillie is a *presumed* daughter of either John A. Odom (probable) or his brother James T. Odom (possible).

That presumption is based on the following:
---In 1900, Lillie J. Odom, born August 1895, appears as the last child in the household of John Odom (father of John A.) where she is identified as the granddaughter of John.
---John, born 1840, had only three sons of age to father Lillie: (1) His son William Franklin, born ca. October 1866; (2) John A., born 1872-73; and (3) James T., born 1876-77.
---In 1900, Frank is enumerated several households from the parental home; he had a 5-year-old of his own, in his household.
---In 1900, neither John A. nor James T. are found; both were oossibly dead. Their mother, that year, stated that she had born 10 children of whom only 8 were alive.
---Assuming that Lillie was not the illegitimate child of one of John's daughters, then John A. and James T. both remain candiates for the parent of Lillie.
---John A., being several years older than James T., would be more likely the father; James T., at her birth, would have been only 18 or so.

See 1900 U.S. Census, Oktibbeha County, MS, population schedule, Beat 4, Enumeration District 93, sheet 13-A, dwell./fam. 230, Frank Odom household; and Sheet 13-B, dwelling and family 245, John Odom household.

COMMENT BY ELIZABETH SHOWN MILLS:
In 1900, Johnn A.'s mother reported that she had borne 10 children, of whom only 8 were still living. John A., who has not been found on the 1900 census, may be one of the two deceased children. See 1900 U.S. Census, Oktibbeha County, MS, pop. sch., Beat 4, Enumeration District 93, sheet 13-B, dwell./fam. 245, John Odom household.
