JOHN HOPE ADAMS was born February 12, 1811, the eldest son of William Adams, Jr. (1785-1870) and Rebeckah Hope (1787-1824) at their home along Crowder’s Creek in upper York County, South Carolina. In his young manhood, on December 6, 1838, he was married to 19-year-old Isabella Carroll Henry (1819-1854), a daughter of William McElwee III and Rachel Newman McElwee. Soon after their marriage, John Adams purchased a commodious homestead on Crowder’s Creek a short distance north of his father’s lands, in the lower edge of Gaston County, North Carolina, near the York County, South Carolina, state line. Here they reared five children: Rebecca E. Adams, Jane Catherine Adams (Caldwell), William Meek Adams, Thomas C. Henry Adams and Lorena Emeline Adams.

Isabella Adams died October 19, 1854, at the relatively young age of 35, of what cause we do not know. She was buried in the Adams plot at Bethel Presbyterian Churchyard. About 1857, the widower Adams married Martha Shaw McGill McElwee (1821-1902), a daughter of Capt. William McGill and Martha Shaw Henry and the widow of James N. McElwee (1819-1846). William and Martha were the parents for three children: James Adams, Edward Hope Adams and Mary Isabella Adams (Jackson).

For many years, John Hope Adams was a faithful member and leader in Bethel Presbyterian Church. He died on January 22, 1893, at his Gaston County home and was buried in Bethel Churchyard beside his beloved first wife, Isabella. Martha McGill Adams died May 1, 1902, at the old Adams homestead on Crowder’s Creek near Bowling Green, S.C., and was buried in Bethany A.R.P. Churchyard beside her first husband.
