Concerning John Allen of Sandwich, MA and Newport, RI, and John Allen Sr. of Sandwich

John Allen of Sandwich, MA, and Newport, RI (John Allen), was first mentioned in Sandwich, MA, in 1642, The first meeting of a representative assembly in Gen. Court, was in 1639, those chosen to represent the town of Sandwich later includes John Allen, 1642, for 1 year. So John was probably born by 1621 or before, d. 30 Oct 1708, South Kingstown RI [d. at South Kingstown RI at house of his son-in-law Rowland Robinson, will dated 13 Sep 1706, proved 16 Mar 1708[/9], mentions sons Samuel, John and Christopher, daughters Elizabeth Tomkins, Mary Robinson, and Mercy Dunkin, son John's children John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mercy, Mary Allen, granddaughter Mary Tomkins], m. 14 Oct 1650 Elizabeth Bacon of Barnstable [John Allen and Elizabeth Bacon married, by Brother Thomas Hinckley, both Anabaptists [Scituate & Barnstable church records, The New England Historic and Genealogical Register, Boston, MA, v. 9, p. 287], Elizabeth d. after 26:9mo:1691 or 26 Nov 1691 based on witnesses to marriage certificates. Children, all listed as born in Newport, RI: 1) Elizabeth, b. Jul 1651, d. 24 Mar 1714, m. 15 Jan 1670 Thomas Tompkins, d. 1724; 2) Mary, b. 24 Feb 1652, d. 1716, m. Dec 1659, d. 24 Oct 1676; 6) Samuel, b. Apr 1661, d. 2 Mar 1717, m. Elizabeth Sanford dau. of Samuel & Sarah (Wadell) Sanford, b. 2 Oct 1663, d. 4 Apr 1743; 7) Christopher, b. 13 Sep 1664, d. abt. Sep 1739 [fell from a horse, left no wife or children, division 1740 to children of brother John of Woodbridge NJ dec'd, to children of brother Samuel of Newport RI dec'd, to children of sister Elizabeth Tompkins of Little Compton dec'd, & to children of sister Mary Robinson of South Kingstown RI dec'd], lived at Little Compton, removed abt. 1719 to South Kingstown RI, m. 1687 Elizabeth Seyauche of Little Compton [marriage bond Boston 19 Jan 1687/8], b. 7 Jul 1668, d. 17 Mar 1737 (assembled from various sources.

Notice: 1) John Allen of Sandwich and Newport was born (by 1621) about 17 or more years earlier than John Allen son of Ralph (Wheelwright) Allen, Jr, (about 1638-1639?); 2) the RI marriage certificates appear to suggest that Elizabeth Allen wife of John Allen of Newport died after the marriage and the birth of the first son of John Allen Sr., son of Ralph (Wheelwright) Allen, Sr.; 3) the will of John Allen of Newport mentions sons Samuel, John and Christopher, daughters Elizabeth Tomkins, Mary Robinson, and Mercy Dunkin, and the children of his son John, dec’d 4 Jan 1702/3 (John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mercy, Mary Allen), and the will of John Allen also mentions his granddaughter Mary Tomkins, so no mention of the three sons of John Allen, Sr., of Sandwich; 4) Christopher Allen last child of John and Elizabeth Allen, fell from a horse, and left no wife or children, a division of his estate in 1740 was to the children of brother John of Woodbridge NJ dec'd, to children of brother Samuel of Newport RI dec'd, to children of sister Elizabeth Tompkins of Little Compton dec'd, & to children of sister Mary Robinson of South Kingstown RI dec'd, but again no mention of the sons of John Allen, Sr., of Sandwich.

So based on the data above, there is no evidence of any relationship between John Allen of Sandwich and Newport, and John Allen Sr. of Sandwich, son of Ralph (Wheelwright) Allen, Sr. John Allen was first mentioned on 1 Jun 1658, at court for not taking oath of fidelity, and ALL of his later records are in Sandwich. When John Allen son of George Allen (Jr.), b. 5 Aug 1658, reached his full age, many of the records list a John Allen Jr. (son of George Jr.) and a John Allen Sr. (son of Ralph (Wheelwright) Allen, Sr.). Although there is no record of the death of John Allen Sr. of Sandwich, the administration of the estate of John Allen of Sandwich, died intestate, was granted to his widow Rebecca, dated 20 May 1706, inventory presented same day [Barnstable Co. Probate]. So the probate of John Allen Sr. of Sandwich in May 1706 was more than two years prior to the death of John Allen of Rhode Island. Later records of the probate and land of John Allen Sr. show that he had three sons, mentioned by age, Isaac, Benjamin and Judah.

The records suggest that John Allen of Sandwich was born in about 1638 or 1639. At this time, his father Ralph (Wheelwright) Allen, Sr., was in Weymouth, MA. There is a suggestion that John was not a son of Ralph, but instead adopted or something similar. So I have only listed the place of birth of John as Massachusetts.
