About John Anderson
The Merchants and Drovers Tavern began its life about 1795 as a two-story commercial building. In 1798, John Anderson purchased the property from Oliver Pierson and applied for a license to operate a “tavern at Rahway."
The Merchants and Drovers Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and is recorded in the Historic American Buildings Survey.
George Washington stayed at the inn in 1789 on his way to New York to be inaugurated as the first president of the United States.
John Anderson served as a private in Capt. Morgan's New Jersey Company during the Revolutionary War.
