About John Andrews, Jr., of Farmington

The Andrews family is discussed in: New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, A Record of the Achievements of Her People in the Making of Commonwealths and the Founding of a Nation

Pages 56-58 _____________________________________________________________________________

This John Andrews of Farmington, CT was not the son of Robert & Grace Andrews of Topsfield MA, and he was not married to Mary Barn[e]s, Elizabeth Waterton, or Sarah Dickinson. The person married to Sarah Dickinson was the other John Andrews, son of Robert & Grace.

A source at says the John Andrews of this page [Jr.] was married to Elizabeth Strickland and to Hester Allen (Allyn?), but gives the same marriage year for each !

The marriage issue is clarified by New England Marriages Prior to 1700, at'''

Page 17 shows John Andrews [Jr.] (b. 1645- ) married Hester Allen (b. ?1647- ); she married 2nd John Allyn (1641-1709; see GENI page) in ~1690; she married 3rd Samuel Fox (~1715). (Page 11 of the book gives the information on John Allyn's marriage to Hester (maiden name Allen) Andrews, widow of John.)

The entry following that of John Andrews (b. 1645-) shows a John Andrews with no birthdate, and he is the person who was married to Elizabeth Strickland (1648, 1647- ). There is no reason to believe that this second John Andrews is the same as John Andrews (b. 1645- ). But he could be.

The Genealogical History of John & Mary Andrews of Farmington, CT / 1640s (see sources) says "the name of his wife is not known."

John Andrews, Jr., eldest son of John the settler, lived in Hartford; married; had land on Connecticut river, and is called on the record of it John Andrus, son of John Andrus, of Farmington, 20th March, 1676-7; also one piece of land sold him by Gregory Winterton, lying in the ox pasture, 10 acres more or less, and is bounded on the highway leading to Wethersfield, on the west, on .John' Cole's land on the south, and on Thomas Marshal's land on the north, and on land of John White, east. He the said Andrews is to maintain the fence-belonging to 16 acres of said Winterton's land lying in the south meadow, in consideration; 15th Feb. 1698-9 he was administrator of the insolvent estate of his deceased son Joseph, who is spoken of in his grandfather's will as living then, 1681, with him in Farmington. Joseph's estate was only £9 lis. 11 d. and his father was allowed by the probate court for this service 10 shillings. He died before 1713, aged about 78.
