John Anthony, Sr. was born in 1718 in North Carolina. His parents were Mark Anthony and Isabella Hester Anthony.

John married Nancy Hart Anthony. Together they had the following children:

• Joel Anthony;
• Hannah Shelton.

He died in 1796 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC, United States and was buried in Walnut Hill, Abstract Graves of Revolutionary Soldiers, #37, Evington, VA.
