About John Archer
John was taxable in 1730 in Norfolk Co., VA On March 6, 1741/2 he paid 40 pounds for 200 acres in Bertie Co, NC near "Hot House" on Edward Carter's line. In 1751 he & his wife Frances were "free Mulatto" taxables in Bertie Co., NC, and in 1757 he was in the list of John Brickell with his wife & 2 children, Ann & Jeremiah. John was still listed in the Bertie Co. Tax Lists after 1759 when Hertford Co. was separated from Bertie, so his land was probably on the Bertie side of the Hertford Co., NC line. In 1775, the family was taxable in the list of Thomas Ward. John purchased 100 acres in Bertie Co., NC near Luson Swamp on October 2, 1777. He was taxable on that land and 7 cattle in 1779 in Wynn's and King's District. The February 1787 Bertie Co, NC Court exempted him from paying poll tax, probably because of his old age.
